The Spiritual Life

Thanks for checking out my blog.  All posts are inspired by where my spiritual life is taking me. They are written to inspire and remind myself to apply spiritual tools to my everyday experience, but I have a feeling you will find something useful here too...

What If...

I’ve been playing the “what if…” game lately.  Not the typical “what if I had only done this instead of that.”  That is a losing game, every time.  Instead, my “what if” has been “what if I really believed what I say I believe?”

For example, what if I really believed that dental hygiene was exceptionally important?  Well, then I would brush twice a day and floss.  I brush twice a day and floss.  I must really believe that dental hygiene is exceptionally important.  This one is pretty easy, but how about…

What if I really believed that I was always supported by an infinite and Universal source for Good?  Well, then I would instantly look at every situation as one in which I can find benefit.  Do I always do that, without fail, just like brushing and flossing?  No.  I do it a lot, but not all the time.  So, I guess I don’t quite believe it 100%.  It isn’t yet a truth actualized in every part of my consciousness.  This isn’t a good thing or a bad thing.  It is just an observation, a way of evaluating how well I’m doing with what I say I believe.  Any gaps I find are fertile working ground.  Here a much harder one…

What if I really believed that God / Spirit / Source / Love (pick your favorite name) is all there is, and that it expresses in everything and everyone?  What if I really believed that every person I meet or speak with is, at the very core of their being, the same Life that lives as me?  If I really, really believed that, I’d never judge anybody.  Regardless of how I was approached, I would respond with love.  Do I always do that?  Nope.

There is another benefit to this type of introspection, beyond seeing our own gaps that we can work to fill.  To quote The Streets, “if you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.”  Thinking about what it would be like to really believe what we say we believe, and live it, will help give us a roadmap, so we know where we’re going.  If we really get in there and use our divine faculty of Imagination, we can create the feeling of it in our body - and science has shown that the physical body can’t tell the difference between a vividly imagined experience and an actual experience.  These feelings that we can create within can be the fuel that keeps driving us forward, to the point where we really do believe what we say we believe, and live it…  Just like brushing twice a day.
